Foundations of Entrepreneurship (ICR201)

|Description||Organisations and the people who establish them create value through innovation and drive. This unit applies key concepts and research to help students develop skills that will help them start their own organisations and create value in the community. It considers the context of entrepreneurial growth, the identification of opportunity, access to key resources and value creation, explains how new ventures can be nurtured and grown and provides a set of tools to help turn ideas into viable ventures.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||Upon successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
LO1: Generate ideas using a broad range of creative thinking tools in an entrepreneurial context.
LO2: Evaluate and design an innovative viable product or service concept
LO3 Effectively collaborate with a range of partners across multi-disciplines including communication, project and time management skills
LO4 Demonstrate ethical awareness when creating creative entrepreneurial venture propositions
LO5 Communicate effectively to a range of audiences using a range of platforms
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Weekly 2.5 hour workshops|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit is built around an entrepreneurial project, for example, a crowdfunding model. Over the course of the unit, students develop a product or service proposal for assessment. Although the unit explores how creative ideas can be refined and applied, it aims to guide students to the point where they can realistically pitch for business funding.
Topics addressed in the unit include entrepreneurial goals and context, identifying opportunity, accessing resources, developing a venture and creating value. And to help achieve this, reliance is placed on:
- Regular guest lectures and industry mentors.
- Participation in and reviews of business proposals and opportunities.
- The review of existing businesses and notable business failures.
- Role plays and simulations, highlighting common hurdles faced by entrepreneurs.
- Shark Tank experiences.
- Considerable blended content.
|Assessment||The core assessment will be a creative enterprise project. The project will be collaborative and multi-disciplinary.
The completion and progression along the way towards completion of unit assignments will attempt to reinforce and solidify learning objectives (sessional and unit level). Feedback from assessor/lecturer is given towards the candidates' business feasibility study and presentation.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
