Introduction to 3D Graphics and Animation (ICT101)

Description This unit introduces the fundamentals of computer graphics, animation, audio and video; essential for digital content development for computer and video games, and eXtended Reality [XR] (Virtual [VR], Augmented [AR], Mixed [MR]) applications. Tools and techniques used for creation of visual and audio information are introduced. Topics include bitmap and vector graphics, processing computer graphics, 2D and 3D geometry, nature of 3D graphics, use of vectors and matrices in graphics, geometric manipulation of 3D graphics, shading, animation, audio, and video.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit, students should be able to:

1) Be familiar with the various applications of 3D Computer Graphics Imagery (CGI) within the 'visual communications' industry
2) Use the Cartesian coordinate system, and create 2D and 3D primitive objects and sub-objects such as vertex, edge, face, and polygon
3) Create 3D models using polygonal modelling
4) Use 2D spline objects and the manipulation of spline vertices (corner, smooth, Bezier, Bezier-Corner) to create 2D and 3D models
5) Create and use materials and texture maps
6) Create animation; animate objects, lights, cameras and materials
7) Present their work
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 x 2 hours per week; Lab: 1 x 2 hours per week (1 hour supervised and 1 hour unsupervised).
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is students learn through lectures and hands-on labs.
Other Learning Experiences Labs complement the lectures in the form of hands-on experience using one of the available industry standard software tools. Besides attending lectures and labs, students will also have access to the LMS to assist them in their learning process. As this is a 3-credit point unit, it is expected that students will spend on average 10.0 hours per week for the total 15 weeks of this teaching period working on this unit. Note that OUA students teaching period would be slightly different.
Assessment Students will be assessed on the basis of:

Labs 10%
Major Assignment Part 1 (Individual) 20%
Major Assignment Part 2 (Individual) 30%
Final Examination 40%
Written feedback via the LMS will be given for the labs and assignments. Unless instructed otherwise, external students will have to submit the lab exercises via the unit's site on the LMS.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
