Foundations of Data Communications (ICT169)

|Description||This unit provides an introduction to data communications. The architectures of TCP/IP and OSI models are studied and students completing the unit will be conversant with the devices, technology and language of data-communications. Practical exercises with switches and routers will place the theory in context, allowing students to design, build and troubleshoot networks. The unit covers significant portions of the Cisco CCNA Certification curriculum. For students specialising in data-communications, subsequent units will add depth and breadth to this foundation.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Describe data communication devices and protocols in terms of the layers of the OSI model.
2. Describe the key functionality of networking protocols and standards, such as IP, TCP, UDP, Ethernet, WiFi/WLANs.
3. Design basic switched and routed networks including the designing of address plans.
4. Configure network devices in accordance with network specifications and design.
5. Configure and understand the operation of switched Ethernet LANs.
6. Configure and understand the operation of IP routers.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 x 2 hours per week; computer laboratories: 1 x 2 hours per week; optional Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS): 1 hour per week.
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
|Unit Learning Experiences||The unit is driven by extensive hands-on activities. These activities are accompanied by readings and recorded lectures. A strong effort has been made to intermix the theory and applied skills in both the lectures and the tutorials. Where possible, examples and activities are drawn from the networks that immediately surround the student.|
|Assessment||The aim is to provide continuous assessment and feedback to students. There will be a lab Participation assessment throughout the semester (10%), a Mid- semester Test (15%), a Practical Exam in teaching week 12 (25%) and a Final Exam (50%). Feedback is given directly on the participation, mid-semester test and practical test as well as via consultation as required.|
|Exclusions||Students who have previously taken ICT103 Introduction to Data Communications may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
