Description Business Intelligence (BI) is a set of outcomes aimed at facilitating improved decision making through the analysis and presentation of organisational data to decision makers. This unit explores the tools and methods used in BI. Topics include: decision making, organisational data sources, data warehousing, data analysis, data and text mining, business performance management and BI presentation suites. Theories introduced are complemented by workshop sessions using various BI tools and techniques.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 2 hours per week; tutorials: 1 hour per week.
Assessment You will have several assessment tasks to complete. There is a weekly online quiz which addresses the material covered in the current topic (collectively worth 10%). Feedback for the quizzes will be provided on the LMS at the completion of the topic. There are two assignments that focus on the workshops which will allow you to demonstrate proficiency in the use of a range of BI tools and techniques. These are collectively weighted at 25%. A group research assignment (15%) will allow you to explore an aspect of BI that is not addressed in this unit. Feedback for these assignments will be provided following submission. The final examination will focus on theory addressed in the unit and is worth 50%.
Prerequisites Nil. Some basic familiarity with spreadsheets and the Internet is assumed.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed ICT208 Commercial Computing may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
