|Description||This unit explores the acquisition, development and implementation of information systems and infrastructure that support the operational, administrative and strategic needs of organisations. Students will develop the ability to critically assess existing information technology infrastructures, emerging technologies and various IS governance frameworks. Sourcing options for the acquisition of information systems and technologies will be evaluated in the context of organisational needs. This unit prepares students for deeper study of information systems in their final year.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of information in organisations, and how it is managed
2. Explain and evaluate the organisational infrastructure and legal and ethical frameworks within which information systems management takes place
3. Construct an information systems management strategy for a given organisation
4. Understand and explain the impacts on information and information systems management of organisational change, including issues such as data migration, information integration, and interoperability, and construct practical solutions in a given situation
5. Explore and discuss the opportunities that exist for information and information systems management in the facilitation of organisational change

Singapore Offerings: 6 x 3.5 hour workshops + 1 x 3 hour workshops
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is focused on discovering how information systems and technologies are managed in the organisation to achieve the most beneficial outcomes. You will learn through seminars, tutorial/computer labs, group-work and self-study. Seminars will focus on the 'big issues' in information systems management, including management structures and roles, sourcing strategies and governance. As an important part of these seminars, students will be required give a short presentation relevant to one of the topics addressed during the unit. Self-learning in the unit will require preparation for the seminars and a report on a relevant topic. There will be a group task, requiring students to work collaboratively in order to solve a given problem.|
|Assessment||Assessment in this unit will involve a mixture of individual and group tasks. The group task will involve the investigation and creation of a collaborative workspace in order to solve a given problem. Individual assessment tasks will include a report on a topic relevant to the unit. There will be an online quiz for each topic. The final assessment in the unit will be a closed-book final examination that will address the theoretical component of the unit.|
|Prerequisites||ICT158 Introduction to Information Systems OR ICT107 Principles Information Systems OR ICT170 Foundations of Computer Systems.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
