Description This unit introduces concepts and techniques associated with Enterprise Architecture (EA), including organization-wide strategic, business, and technology planning. Students will develop the ability to understand how information technology resources could be utilized to support organizations' strategic goals and business requirements. Students will also be able to understand main the EA methodologies, frameworks, and techniques, such as the EA3 'Cube' Framework.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the basic concepts and techniques of EA.
2. Describe how EA tools can be used to document an organization's architecture.
3. Evaluate organizations' strategy, business, and technology planning in the context of an EA.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the utility of the various EA frameworks and methodologies.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of IT and business management issues related to EA.
Timetabled Learning Activities Tutorials: 3 hours per week.
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is focused on understanding how Enterprise Architecture is implemented in the enterprise to achieve the most beneficial outcomes. Students will learn through tutorials, group-work and self-study. Seminars will focus on the 'important concept' in Enterprise Architecture, including implementation methodology, documentation framework, architecture components and artefacts. As an important part of these seminars, students will be required give a short presentation relevant to one of the topics addressed during the unit. Self-learning in the unit will require preparation for the seminars and a report on a relevant topic. There will be a group task, requiring students to work collaboratively in order to solve a given problem.
Assessment Assessment in this unit will involve a mixture of individual and group tasks. In the group task, students will work collaboratively to design and create an enterprise architecture for a certain organization (25%). Individual assessment tasks will include a presentation and a report which compares different enterprise architectures (25%). This unit also has weekly case studies and their completions will be worth 10%. The final 40% of the assessment in the unit will be a closed-book final examination that will address the theoretical component of the unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
