Mobile Application Development (ICT376)

|Description||This unit focuses on mobile application development using mobile development techniques and environments. Topics covered include app life cycle; small device programming; platform architecture including Google Android, Apple iOS, and Microsoft Windows Phone; web applications for mobile; cross platform development.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||Students will learn to develop applications for current and emerging mobile computing devices, performing tasks at all stages of the application development life-cycle from inception through to implementation and testing. Specifically, at the end of this course, the students should be able to:
1. Technology and Application - Describe and compare current mobile technologies, their strengths and their limitations.
2. Techniques and Algorithms - Explain and apply the techniques on platforms used for developing mobile applications.
3. Design and Implementations - Design and implement well-structured mobile applications using programming languages and standard mobile application frameworks.
4. Coding and Debugging - Demonstrate sound skills in coding and debugging program code written for mobile applications.
5. Testing - Apply the fundamentals of mobile app testing, design and automate test plans for mobile applications.
6. Collaborative and Team Work - Acquire a basic appreciation of what is involved in teamwork.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 1 x 2 hours per week; tutorials: 1 x 2 hours per week (1 hour unsupervised).|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit consists of lectures and tutorial sessions. Lectures will be covering topics including app life cycle; small device programming; platform architecture including Google Android, Apple iOS; web applications for mobile; cross platform development. Tutorial sessions (in the form of computer practice) will consist of programming exercises that the students need to complete in order to understand the concepts in achieving the aims of the unit. In order to assess a small subset of the learning outcomes, each tutorial exercise will require the development of solutions to some small problems. There is also an assignment and a project that the students need to hand in over the period of the semester. The purpose of the assignment and project is to demonstrate a larger subset of the learning outcomes and to ensure that students can integrate the knowledge that they have acquired. All the materials and resources for students to complete the practical exercises, assignment and project will be available through LMS.|
|Assessment||10% of the marks will be allocated to the demonstration of solutions to practical exercises. Internal students will demonstrate this work in their tutorial class and receive immediate feedback. External students will submit electronically and receive feedback through email.
15% of the marks will be allocated to an assignment which will require the use of the materials covered, research and some self-directed study to produce a report.
35% of the marks will be based on a project where the students, through self-directed study, make use of most of the materials covered in the unit. Feedback will be provided for the assignment and project through the LMS.
Finally, 40% of the marks will be the allocated to final closed book theory examination.
|Prerequisites||ICT286 Web and Mobile Computing; ICT159 Foundations of Programming or ICT102 Introduction to Computer Science.|
|Notes||Each student is expected to read the lecture notes and any recommended material relevant to the topic for each week. Students will be able to access the unit information and learning materials through LMS. A list of relevant reference texts and resources will be provided. Students will also need to spend some time doing the lab exercises for that week. In addition each student needs to complete one assignment, one project and sits for the final examination.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
