Description Business Intelligence (BI) has become a focus of organisations wishing to make more effective use of their data resource. This unit examines both the theoretical and practical aspects of BI, from discovery, inventory, extraction and transformation of data sources, through the common approaches to data analysis, to management reporting environments (MRE). The practical component of this unit will involve students creating a data warehouse and MRE, using a range of BI tools used in industry.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Describe the common data sources that exist in organisations and their use in BI
2. Demonstrate practical skills in the processes associated with extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) of organisational data
3. Design and implement a simple data warehouse environment
4. Determine and create the most appropriate visualisation to communicate a particular analysis
5. Demonstrate proficiency at working in a group to create a working self-service BI environment to a given specification
Timetabled Learning Activities Computer laboratories: 2 hours per week for on-campus offerings at the Murdoch and Dubai campuses.
6 x 3.5 hour classes + 1 x 3 hour class for Singapore offerings.
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit involves you exploring and deepening your understanding of business intelligence (BI) in organisations and how it is used for management decision making. The seminars will include a combination of lectures and student presentations, discussing theoretical issues and case studies. Computer labs will build on knowledge developed in ICT285 Databases, focussing on the data warehousing process and developing skills in the use of a range of analytics and presentation tools and approaches.
Assessment There are four assessment activities in this unit. There are online submissions for each topic; these may be multiple-choice, short-answer or require the student to upload a file. There is a data warehouse design exercise to assist you with developing the skills you will need for the major project. In the major project, you will work in a small team to develop a business intelligence reporting environment for an organisation. The unit has a final exam.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
