Introduction to Graphic Design (IDD118)

|Description||This unit explores visual communication as it relates to the processes, techniques, and creative possibilities of digital and graphic design production. Throughout the unit students develop a thorough and culturally informed understanding of critical graphic design and new media history and theory. Students will also develop practical design skills through the rigorous development of numerous graphic design projects.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate sound skills in basic graphic design
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical and theoretical context of graphic design production
3. Demonstrate the capacity to engage in creative and critically informed graphic design practice
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Online lecture; media laboratories: 2.5 hours per week.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit involves a series of lab sessions that practically reinforce the history, theory and concepts of graphic design and visual communication. Students will engage visual problem solving and critical thinking methods from a range of theoretical perspectives and then apply these techniques to a series of design projects. The learning in this unit also integrates a series of lectures outlining the formal tools, techniques and concepts comprising the field of graphic design, ranging from semiotics, gestalt psychology to the analysis of contemporary graphic design|
|Assessment||Assessment and feedback are iterative in that each assessment will cumulatively build on the next toward the successful design and development of several graphic design projects . Students receive feedback through, in class discussion, written assignments, student group work and online assignment feedback and discussion. Students will also be expected to read additional technical articles and analyse contemporary graphic design in several contexts.
There are four types of assessment as follows:
Design Research, Creative Work worth 20%, Peer Design Review worth 20%, Homework worth 20%, and Portfolio worth 40%.
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed MUL118 Principles of Multimedia or MCC118 Visual Communication or IDD118 Visual Communication may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
