Japanese 4 (JPN202)

Description In parallel with the pre-intermediate JPN201 Japanese 3 unit, this unit aims to enhance students' further communication skills in both spoken and written Japanese, and their socio-cultural understanding of Japan. In the context of various topics relevant to university life in Japan, it builds competence in manipulation of such complex sentence structures as: giving and receiving favours; expressing change, conditions, conjecture and comparison; multiple actions; permission and prohibition; hearsay; and introduces the use of relative clauses.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this unit you, as a student, should be able to:
1. Comprehend moderately-paced speech by native Japanese speakers talking about how to do things; discussing facilities and rules at Japanese youth hostels; stating their opinions; seeking and giving permission; and expressing their feelings.
2. Read and write simple Japanese texts using a combination of hiragana, katakana and kanji related to the above topics.
3. Use the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied in the unit to talk about those topics, both in conversation and as part of a prepared speech.
4. Produce a neatly composed, appropriately-referenced short essay in Japanese, incorporating vocabulary and grammatical structures studied in the unit.
5. Understand Japanese social customs related to the themes studied in the unit.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lecture: 1 x 2 hours per week; Workshops: 2 x 2 hours per week; Weeks 8-14 inclusive (excluding non-teaching weeks).
Unit Learning Experiences Over 6 weeks, a combination of structured timetabled learning in 6 hours of language classes per week, employing a communication-oriented oral/aural approach; and 8 hours of self-directed learning tasks as an essential reinforcement of classroom activities, including regular set homework; reading and writing practice of Japanese characters and texts; listening to authentic Japanese speakers on LMS and other media; and completing an assignment.
Assessment 2 mid-semester tests (10% and 15%, respectively); aural exam (10%); written exam (25%); written assignment (15%); oral presentation in class based on the assignment (10%); 2 kanji quizzes (5% each); and In-class performance (5%).
Prerequisites Successful completion of JPN172 Japanese 1B or JPN201 Japanese 3, otherwise an equivalent level of competency as assessed by the Unit Coordinator.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
