Legal Strategy in Organisations (LLB309)

Organisational Unit Law and Criminology

Description This unit explores the role of in house counsel including their contribution to strategy and their interactions with the CEO and a Board. The students will consider strategy in different areas of the law, learn how to approach business and strategic issues and be well positioned for future leadership roles. This unit enables students to develop their strategic thinking skills by exposure to the challenges of senior legal function leaders in organisations.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of in house counsel;
2. Explain how in house counsel contribute to organisation strategy;
Contribute to and critically review strategy in a number of functional areas
Timetabled Learning Activities 12 x 2 hour sessions. Evening Classes once per week
Unit Learning Experiences This unit will combine the formal lecture format with focused discussions and application of the theory to a real life example.
Assessment The assessment will be a 50% exam and 50% strategy paper.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
