Advanced Honours Topic A (MBS516)

Description As part one of series of Advanced Honours Topic (A and B), this unit prepares students to do an independent research project. Students will choose a topic area in agreement with their academic supervisor. Students will develop understanding and knowledge of a particular theory or perspective at an advanced level in their chosen topic area. Through the completion of two assessments designed to review a chosen topic, students will develop discipline specific knowledge, and research, organisational and academic writing skills.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of topic in the discipline associated with the chosen research topic.
2. Apply discipline knowledge to identify, search and systematically map the literature relevant to the chosen topic.
3. Use independent learning strategies that support self-organise and discipline in exploring and reviewing relevant literature.
4. Apply effective written and synthesizing skills in literature review.
Timetabled Learning Activities
Unit Learning Experiences Students will be guided by an academic supervisor to develop their independent learning skill which is critical to their success as independent researcher.
Assessment In accordance with University policy, there are minimum two types of assessments in this unit. Academic supervisor will design the assessment types, aligned with the desired learning outcomes and relevant to students' research fields and chosen discipline; e.g. essay, exam, project, annotated bibliography, quantitative exercises etc.
Prerequisites Enrolment in Honours in Bachelor of Business.
Exclusions Students who have completed BUS4011 Advanced Honours Topic in Commerce may not enrol in MBS516 for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
