Effective Leadership (MBS5872)

|Description||This unit proposes that leadership arises when facing adaptive challenges, locating leadership within the strategy process and distinguishing leadership from management. Traditional theories of leadership are introduced but the focus is the capabilities that an organisation needs to develop - drawing upon the Sloan Distributed Leadership Model and Ronald Heifetz's work on Adaptive Leadership. Students are exposed to a variety of activities that allow them to gain some understanding of themselves, as leadership requires the development of self-awareness.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. Distinguish between leadership and management;
2. Evaluate, interrelate and apply the four capabilities of sensemaking, relating, visioning and inventing;
3. Analyze the principles of leading adaptive work and the difference between technical and adaptive challenges;
4. Apply the tools introduced in this unit to promote engagement.
5. Demonstrate high quality communication skills, including preparing and delivering oral presentations.
6. Work effectively in a team to achieve a shared objective.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Seminars: South Street Murdoch, 3 x 2.5 hours per week during the winter teaching semester or 2 x 2 hours per week during the summer teaching semester.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The unit is delivered using blended learning design features with core unit materials provided in a digital format followed up by small class knowledge application and skills development. This is enhanced by self-directed learning to further develop skills and application of knowledge to practical and current issues.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of leadership relevant to their personal characteristics.|
|Assessment||Assessment for this unit is a combination of individual and group.
- Critical Incidents Activity Integration and Reflection and Personal Analysis (30%). This assessment aligns with learning outcomes 1, 2, 3.
- Group - Movie Presentation (30%). This assessment aligns with learning outcomes 4.
- Individual - Closed Book Exam (40%). This assessment aligns with learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4.
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in C1115 Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (MasterClass).|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed MBS671 Effective Leadership, MBS687 Effetive Leadership, MBS6872 Effective Leadership or MBS6711 Effective Leadership may not enrol in this unit for credit.|
|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
