Qualitative Organisational Research (MBS619)

Description Qualitative research focuses on understanding, rather than predicting or controlling phenomena. Many business researchers believe it an essential approach in the study of the complexities of people in organisations. The unit will examine the rationale and major principles underpinning qualitative research and consider popular methods in use. Students will consider the qualitative approaches to data collection and participate in a project requiring analysis and interpretation. The interaction with mixed methods approaches and the evaluation of research outcomes will also be examined.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research concepts, philosophies, underlying assumptions, literature, analysis, and interpretation
2. Apply knowledge of research methods in business and management to private, public and nonprofit organisations.
3. Exhibit effective communication and interpersonal skills
4. Evaluate issues and problems and develop evidence-based conclusions
5. Demonstrate the capability to engage in lifelong learning
6. Display the capability to think across cultures and contexts
Integrate knowledge of the principles and practice of ethical research
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/seminars/workshops: 3 hours per fortnight for 5 face-to-face sessions plus, 1 hour introduction session and final presentation session. Students must also engagement with online learning material that represents approximately 5 hours over the course of the unit.
Unit Learning Experiences The unit is delivered using blended learning design features with core unit materials provided in a digital format followed up by small class knowledge application and skills development. This is enhanced by self directed learning to further develop skills and application of knowledge to practical and current issues.
Assessment This unit has three points of assessment. An online portfolio (50%) will assess ongoing understanding of the content of the unit over the course of the semester. A staged individual assignment will include development of a report (plan) and then presentation recording on an important aspect of the course.
Prerequisites Enrolment in a graduate-level course.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
