Effective Leadership (MBS687)

Organisational Unit Business
Credit Points 3
Description This unit explores the nature and role of leadership using selected readings, case studies and discussion. Issues such as 'What is leadership?', 'What do leaders do?' and 'What determines a leader's success or failure?' will be tackled, as well as the key question, 'What is the difference between leading and managing?' The unit focuses on distributed leadership where everyone in the organisation contributes to developing the organisation's leadership capability and developing personal awareness of these leadership capabilities.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. distinguish between leadership and management;
2. explain, interrelate and apply the four capabilities of sensemaking, relating, visioning and inventing;
3. explain the principles of leading adaptive work and the difference between technical and adaptive challenges;
4. through group work, to be conversant in applying key concepts to analyse and evaluate situations you find yourself in;
5. with the help of your group, gain awareness of your own leadership capabilities through constructive reflective practice.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/seminars workshops delivered weekly in one or two three hourly blocks. Total contact time 30 hours.
Unit Learning Experiences The unit is delivered using blended learning design features with core unit materials provided in a digital format followed up by small class knowledge application and skills development. This is enhanced by self directed learning to further develop skills and application of knowledge to practical and current issues.
Assessment There are assignments to develop self awareness and application of the concepts (60%), and theoretical mastery and application (40%). Self awareness is derived from written analysis arising from group discussions centred around a leadership experience in a student's life. Mastery is assessed on application of course concepts to an examination case study.

All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
