Description This unit addresses the question of how film makes sense from a broad context of historical, political, socio-economic, and cultural perspectives. It provides a theoretical foundation for students to think critically about cinema and to write about screen art in a scholarly manner. The unit consists of two learning blocks: (1) methodological questions of how films are studied; and (2) aesthetic questions of narratology, genre, and authorship, as well as questions of the representation of gender, race and minority groups.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 hour per week; tutorials: 1.5 hours per week.
Prerequisites Nil.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed MED232 Screen Texts may not enrol in this unit for credit.
Notes Students enrolled at the Dubai campus should enrol in MCC2481.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
