|Description||In this unit students study the discourse of globalisation from interdisciplinary perspectives. They examine corporate responses including corporate social responsibility to a range of global challenges identified by the United Nations. These challenges include human trafficking, HIV/AIDS, power and practices of transnational corporations. Importantly, it provides an opportunity for students to: recognise that corporates respond to and communicate their responses/ responsibilities to global issues in multiple ways; broaden their understanding of issues and identify others, and communicate their own opinions.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to demonstrate that you:
1. Understand concepts and how they play out in the world or their implications for peoples' lives, for example globalisation, and their inter relationships with other concepts.
2. Access the latest available online data from reliable government, NGO, health websites and through library research.
3. Write a well-researched essay on a topic from the unit that demonstrates your ability to research and write at the postgraduate level.
4. Have further developed your independent learning.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Seminars: 3 hours per week, which may include evenings and weekends. Students will complete assignments independently in consultation with teaching staff.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||In this unit students will have the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways. They will participate in class discussion by reflecting on readings, viewing and experiences of globalisation. In this way students will develop their ability to communicate, critically read and argue. Discussion of ideas (based on prior reading as well as students' own experiences) will assist them to plan and write. It will also assist students develop collegiality. Students' responses and input are vital contributions to the development of both their own and their colleagues' learning.
|Assessment||For 10 weeks students will write a response to the week's topic in class (30%). This will help focus on the reading and connect it to communication. Students will do this in depth by writing a critical literature review (20%), which will prepare them to plan and write a research essay (30%). Students will work singularly or in pairs to explore and present one of the unit topics (20%). Working collegially will allow students the opportunity to receive feedback from peers; a vital part of professional life. Students will receive written feedback on written assignments focusing on content, argument and writing. Assignments are planned so that each one builds on the previous one.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
