International Strategic Communication and Culture (MCM605)

Description This unit explores the theory and practice of communication, drawing on recent strategic communication and public relations scholarship focusing on critical, global and cultural perspectives. Students will develop skills in academic reading, research and writing, and critically engage with theory to explore the challenges of communication management in different cultural contexts and the implications for communication practice. Topics include gender and diversity in public relations; public activism.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Critically evaluate the relationship between culture and communications, and between communication and public relations
2. Analyse the links between socio-cultural contexts and communication practice
3. Write theoretically informed essays, informed by critical engagement with a range of scholarly perspectives on public relations, communication and culture
4. Prepare a theoretically informed and engaging presentation and participate in a question and answer session.
Timetabled Learning Activities Eight x three hours seminars.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is through seminars. You should prepare for seminars by completing the weekly readings and study questions prior to class.
Other Learning Experiences Independent reading and analysis.
Assessment Seminar participation and preparation (10%)
Seminar abstract, 20-minute presentation & discussion (40%)
Essay plan (10%)
Essay- 2,500 words (40%)

Students are required to critically engage with the unit content, challenging assumptions and ways of thinking. The assessments are therefore designed to test conceptual grasp and theoretical grounding of the unit themes. Feedback to students will be provided via LMS and during the seminar sessions.
Prerequisites Enrolment in graduate course of study.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed MCC546 Professional Communication or MCC685 Public Relations in Society or MCM605 Public Relations, Communication and Culture cannot enrol in this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
