Health Communication Project (MCM608)

Description This is a project-based unit allowing students to apply their theoretical learning to an authentic health communication task in order to develop high-level communication management skills. Students may participate in a client or educator-led project under the supervision of an academic member of staff. Students may work individually or as a member of a team. The precise nature of the project and the assessment requirements are negotiated with the Unit Coordinator.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Work on an authentic real world industry project.
2. Apply professional skills to your chosen discipline.
3. Show an understanding of ethical industry practice.
4. Appreciate and understand the production of materials to fulfill client/organisation project needs.
5. Demonstrate an understanding the principles of project management for health industries.
Timetabled Learning Activities Individual consultation with academic supervisor (24 hours total).
Unit Learning Experiences Students experience practice-oriented research-led consultation based on real-world experiences and projects that ensure integration of theory and practice. Students will engage with the University's learning management system Moodle and are expected to undertake self-directed learning outside of set consultation times, including but not limited to secondary research and reading.
Other Learning Experiences Filed trips and placements may be made available to the student depending on the project
Assessment Project Brief and Personal Goals: 1000 words, Formative 20%, Individual, due early
Research Report: 2500 words, Formative, 35%, Individual, due mid
Final project Report and Critical Reflections: 2500 words, Summative, 45%, Individual, due end
Prerequisites Enrolment in graduate-level study. Admittance by consultation with Unit Coordinator

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
