Research Project in Communication (MCM680)

Description Undertake an independent research project in the broad field of Communication that will enable students to apply what they have learned or studied during prior semesters in conjunction with their professional experiences and interests and/or scholarly interests.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
· Develop advanced skills and best practice in doing research.
· Conceptualise, develop and execute a research project in Communication.
Timetabled Learning Activities Initial two to three compulsory seminars, followed by regular contact in person or otherwise with the Unit Coordinator during the project.
Unit Learning Experiences This is a self-directed research project unit that requires the student to demonstrate independent research capability or project writing skills. Students will be guided for the initial 4 to 6 weeks of the semester before they are tasked to conduct and complete their research projects. Students are expected to commit approximately 18 hours per week to the unit.
Assessment Students will be guided towards completing an independent research project via the following deliverables:
1) Summaries and Research Proposal - due Week 4 - approx. 2000 words (worth 20%)
2) Literature Review and Bibliography - due Week 8 - 2000-3000 words (worth 20%)
3) Final Report or Essay - due Week 15 - 5000-6000 words, plus References (worth 60%)
Unit Co-ordinator will provide personalised feedback through the course of the semester.
Prerequisites Enrolment in M1209 Master of Communication Management or M1277 Master of Communication. Students are normally expected to enrol in this unit once they have completed most other course requirements.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
