Global Media: Asia-Pacific Perspectives (MCM682)

Description This unit explores the dynamics of the political, economic, cultural and social impacts of the global media from an Asia-Pacific perspective. It discusses the key functions of the global media industry and institutions, media content and discourse, as well as media markets and consumption in a number of key Asia-Pacific nation-states. Students will engage with current issues, themes and debates about the global media, from a Western and a non-Western perspective.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Understand the theories and discourses surrounding the subject of global media;
2. Identify major issues and debates in which the media is implicated in the Asia-Pacific region;
3. Demonstrate an ability to understand media development in the AsiaPacific on a global scale and within national boundaries, as well as to local content;
4. Show competence in analysing Asia-Pacific media issues and discourses from the perspective of different political, economic and cultural contexts;
5. Acquire an ability to locate media in relevant social contexts and in relation to its industrial needs, i.e. in terms of funding, producing, marketing and transmitting.
Timetabled Learning Activities Seminars: Semi-intensive seminars (of 2.5 hours each) will be scheduled for one half of the semester.
Unit Learning Experiences Students are required to attend 6 semi-intensive seminars over the course of the semester, during which lectures, seminar discussions, debates, presentations and screenings will be conducted.
Assessment 1) Seminar Reflections - 20%
2) In-class Presentation (2000 words) - 30%
3) Major Essay (3000 words) - 50%
Students will receive timely written feedback for key assignments from the tutor and/or Unit Coordinator.
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Master of Communication Management or a Graduate course.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
