Advanced MESH Project (MCM684)

|Description||This is a project-based unit where students work as MESH (the School of Arts research-led industry practice consultancy) consultants in a simulated consulting environment, taking a collaborative approach to working on a real-life client/s; with the emphasis on the development, implementation and successful completion of genuine, client-based projects. Students will analyse issues drawn from non-profit, business, education and political cases, drawing on principles learned in their units to create solutions to client communication challenges.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. Work on an authentic real-world industry project.
2. Apply professional skills to your chosen discipline.
3. Show an understanding of ethical industry practice.
4. Appreciate and understand the production of materials to fulfil client project needs.
5. Demonstrate an understanding the principles of project management for creative media and communication industries.
|Timetabled Learning Activities|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is iterative and project based in which students have hands on experience of working with a real- life client. Students will research, plan and construct a research report or communications plan for their client. Students will apply the technical application of communication tools and techniques that engages the goals of a specific brief. Students will also experience practice-oriented teaching based on real-world case studies and action-learning projects that ensures a tight integration of theory and practice.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Direct consultations and meetings with academic supervisor (24 hours). These may take the form a group consultations with other MESH consultants or one-to-one.
Students may have the opportunity to undertake a placement or field trip as part of this unit.
|Assessment||Assessment in this unit may include
· Professionalism and participation
· Reverse client briefs
· Research reports
· Communication campaign proposals
· Critical reflection
· Online discussion and quizzes
Assessment and feedback are iterative in that each assessment will build on the next toward the successful design, development and implementation of an online communication campaign. Students receive feedback through written assignments, presentations and online assignment feedback and discussion

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
