The Healthy Human Body 2 (NUR121)
|Description||This unit builds on previous unit content of NUR111 (The Healthy Human Body 1) and continues to examine the maintenance of essential life processes by highlighting the inter-relationship of body organ systems and homeostasis. This unit will contribute to the foundation of knowledge required for the principles and practice of nursing. Participation in laboratory activities will assist students in developing competence in the application of this knowledge to their nursing practice.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Describe and explain the respiratory system, the mechanics and control of gas exchange.
2. Explain the components of blood, haemostasis and replacement.
3. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system and demonstrate an understanding of its regulation and interaction with the respiratory and renal systems.
4. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the central, peripheral and autonomous nervous systems and discuss their role in homeostasis.
5. Discuss the role of sleep and pain.
6. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the five senses.
7. Explain endocrine organs and their functions.
8. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive organs.
9. Explain basic human genetics, foetal development, birth and lactation.
10. Discuss the application of knowledge gained in this unit to clinical practice
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lecture: 1 hour per week; Tutorials: 2 hours per week. Lectures delivered face-to-face in alternate weeks across both Perth and Mandurah Campuses and recorded during the delivery and available via ECHO through the web unit on the learning management system (LMS).|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit includes structured on-campus and recorded lectures, and semi-structured two-hourly workshops/laboratories. The laboratories involve group learning tasks which will develop teamwork, communication and problem solving. These sessions will provide the opportunity for students to practise skills essential for future clinical practice. Online resources will be used and readings from the prescribed text book will be encouraged to enhance learning.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Optional Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) may be available: 1 hour per week.|
|Assessment||The assessment components of this unit include two online quizzes (10% each), a group presentation (30%) and a final examination (50%). Assessment in this unit is used to provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, analysis, problem solving and application of theoretical concepts to practice|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
