Professional Nursing Practice 2 (NUR123)

Description This unit introduces students to the role of values, ethics and advocacy in professional nursing practice. Models of health, community and palliative care, along with Australian health care reform and its relevance to nursing are explored. Theories of teaching and learning will be introduced, and students will have opportunities to develop their health education skills using evidence based theoretical knowledge and practice. Finally students will be introduced to medications, how they work, relevant legislation, medication orders, safety, terminology and calculations.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the role of values, ethics, and advocacy in professional nursing practice;
2. Explain the models of health and community care, health care reform in Australia, and how these influence nursing practice in the community;
3. Identify and understand the legal aspects of medications, actions of drugs on the body, elements of medication orders, and requirements for medication safety;
4. Demonstrate skills in medication calculations, unit of measurement conversions and terminology at an introductory level;
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the theories of teaching and learning, and use evidence-based practice to demonstrate skills in assessment of learning needs, and to plan, implement, evaluate and document therapeutic teaching and learning at a beginning level;
6. Describe professional nursing practice in the context of palliative care.
Timetabled Learning Activities Tutorials: 2 hours per week
Unit Learning Experiences This unit incorporates structured weekly lectures and interactive tutorial sessions to integrate theory and practice. Self-directed learning will prepare students for individual and group learning in tutorials. Online learning material and activities will be provided to assist and support students in their learning.
Other Learning Experiences Lecture: 1 hour per week, prerecorded and available via ECHO through the web unit on the learning management system.
Assessment The assessment components of this unit include two online quizzes and one written assignment. Assessments are designed to consolidate formal timetabled and informal self-directed learning, and to assist students in linking theory and practice. Assessments will allow students to evaluate and demonstrate their understanding of theoretical material to achieve unit learning outcomes. Students will receive detailed feedback on the Written Assignment.
Prerequisites Completion of NUR112 Health Across the Lifespan 1and NUR114 Professional Practice 1.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
