Case Based Inquiry Community Perspectives 1 (NUR233)
|Description||This unit will engage students in simulated case based inquiry to introduce them to the complexity of caring for patients in the community settings. Students will explore health and illness across the lifespan through the lens of the community nurse incorporating critical thinking, problem solving and evidence based practice to provide holistic nursing care. This unit is the first of three units with a medical-surgical focus that reflect current health trends in Australia focusing on national health priority areas.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On completion of this unit the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the nursing competencies relating to primary health care and community nursing of individuals and groups in diverse contextual and interdisciplinary settings.
2. Identify, analyse and discuss legal and ethical issues relating to nursing practice in a community setting. 3. Apply theoretical and conceptual frameworks of health promotion and behaviour change to community nursing practice
4. Discuss the nursing management of symptoms in a range of chronic or lifestyle related illness including cardiac, pulmonary and neurological diseases, disability, mental illness, and degenerative diseases.
5. Relate the psychosocial impact of chronic illness and disability on individuals, families and communities. 6. Apply the nursing process and critical thinking in community nursing.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Tutorial: 3 hours per week|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Over the course of the semester students will complete 3 modules, with each module centering on a case study designed to introduce students to community nursing. Students will be asked to apply the nursing process to three distinct patients whilst developing core clinical and community nursing skills. In each workshop students will be asked to apply the knowledge they have learnt to different scenarios and develop an appreciation for holistic nursing care. This unit is designed to be a hands-on simulated learning experience for the student and requires each student to actively participate in both the workshop sessions and complete the assigned pre reading and online learning tasks.|
|Assessment||The assessments for this unit include the presentation of a clinical teaching session and an end of semester exam. The clinical teaching session will require the student to work within a small group environment to present the correct application of a clinical skill. The assessment will also involve the submission of an individual 500 word reflection. The end of semester exam will consist of short answer and extended response questions in relation to clinical case studies.|
|Prerequisites||Completion of BNR100, BNR150, NUR121, NUR122 and NUR123.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
