Case Based Inquiry Acute Care Perspectives 2 (NUR242)
|Description||This unit will engage students in simulated case based inquiry to introduce them to the complexity of caring for patients in acute care settings. Students will explore health and illness across the lifespan through the lens of the acute care nurse incorporating critical thinking, problem solving, and evidence based practice to provide holistic nursing care. This unit is the second of two units with a medical-surgical focus that reflect current health trends in Australia focusing on national health priority areas.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On completion of this unit the student will be able to:
1. Develop their understanding of the nursing competencies relating to the care of patients in the acute care setting.
2. Identify, analyse and discuss legal and ethical issues relating to nursing practice in acute care settings.
3. Discuss the nursing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care in a range of acute illnesses including gastrointestinal, endocrine, renal, musculoskeletal diseases across the life span.
4. Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and nursing evidence based practice in a variety of acute care scenarios including perioperative care, paediatric or acute medical.
5. Apply the nursing process and critical thinking in acute care nursing.
6. Develop essential nursing skills relevant to acute care settings that ensure safe, effective and evidence based nursing practice for patients across the lifespan whilst promoting a therapeutic nurse patient relationship.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Tutorial: 3 hours per week|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Over the course of the semester students will complete 3 modules, each module centres around a case study designed to develop students understanding of acute care nursing. Students will be asked to apply the nursing process to three distinct patients whilst developing core clinical nursing skills. In each workshop students will be asked to apply the knowledge they have learnt to different scenarios and develop an appreciation for holistic nursing care. This unit is designed to be a hands-on simulated learning experience for the student and requires each student to actively participate in both the workshop sessions and complete the assigned pre reading and online learning tasks.|
|Assessment||Students will undertake three assessment components within this unit which focus on providing relevant real world examples of case studies, policies and practice standards which students will encounter in acute nursing. These assessments are designed to challenge students knowledge and critical thinking skills within case based contexts.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
