Clinical Practice 4: Medical/Surgical/Mental Health/Paediatrics/Maternity/Primary Health/Community Paediatrics (NUR262)

Description This unit is the fourth of six clinical practice units which provide the opportunity for students to develop clinical skills, knowledge and competency within different clinical contexts. Each of the units is intended to incrementally support students in their transition from nursing student to registered nurse. Building on the previous clinical practice units the focus is on the application of the acute care nursing skills and knowledge as they can be utilised within different clinical contexts.
Timetabled Learning Activities Clinical Practice: 8 hours per day for 15 days (120 hours) within allocated placement period. Students will also be required to undertake an additional 8 hours in total pre and post placement for preparation and feedback.
Assessment Students must demonstrate evidence of meeting the ANMC National Competency Standards for Registered Nurses (2006) at a level commensurate with a fourth semester nursing student to achieve a pass in this unit. Assessment will be based on the SHP Student Clinical portfolio containing:
* Student objectives for the particular clinical practice context
* Reflective papers about the student's experience within the particular clinical practice context
* Employer Competency Assessments
* Attendance Requirements
* Clinical Skills Assessments
* Interim and Final Regulatory assessments by clinical nurse facilitators, supervisors and staff in the clinical context within which the student is practising.
Prerequisites NUR257 Clinical Practice 3, NUR256 Medication Management for Nursing; NUR205 Acute Care 2; NUR259 Maternal, Child and Adolescent Nursing Care.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed other clinical context and hours should contact the Academic Chair.
Notes Students will apply the skills and knowledge gained in the theoretical units they have successfully completed and will only be placed in these clinical contexts. The clinical fieldwork will contribute to the total of 1008 clinical hours over the six clinical practice units.
Assessment A result of Ungraded Pass or Fail is awarded for this unit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
