Case Based Inquiry Complex Care Perspectives (NUR353)

Description Through simulated case based inquiry students will continue to develop their understanding of complex patient care. This final case based inquiry unit will extend the students ability to practice holistic nursing care through the management of complex patient scenarios by incorporating critical thinking, problem solving, and evidence based practice. Students will be required to utilise the knowledge and skills gained throughout their degree to prioritise patient care in a range of settings that reflect current health trends in Australia.
Unit Learning Outcomes On completion of this unit the student will be able to:
1. Develop their understanding of the nursing competencies relating to the care of patients with complex health issues.
2. Identify, analyse and discuss legal and ethical issues relating to nursing practice in complex illness.
3. Discuss the nursing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care in a range of complex illnesses.
4. Integrate knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and nursing evidence based practice into a variety of complex scenarios involving multi system failure.
5. Apply the nursing process and critical thinking in complex care nursing.
6. Develop essential nursing skills relevant to complex care settings that ensure safe, effective and evidence based nursing practice for patients across the lifespan whilst promoting a therapeutic nurse patient relationship.
Timetabled Learning Activities Clinical Laboratory 2 hours, Tutorial 2 hours
Unit Learning Experiences Over the course of the semester students will undertake care based on 3 modules, each module centres around specific case studies designed to introduce students to complex nursing problems. Students will be asked to apply the nursing process to patients within specific complex health care environments whilst integrating core clinical nursing skills. In each tutorial/clinical laboratory, students will be asked to apply the knowledge they have learnt to different scenarios and develop an appreciation for holistic nursing care. This unit is designed to be a hands-on simulated learning experience for the student and requires each student to actively participate in both the workshop sessions and complete the assigned pre reading and online learning tasks.
Assessment The assessments for this unit include a clinical skills examination (20%), an on-line V-Sim assessment (20%) and an end of semester examinations (60%). The clinical skills assessment will be a high fidelity clinical skills and clinical documentation assessment. The V-Sim assessment will be consist of the students completing care of a virtual patient over the course of the semester and will be automatically submitted before the end of semester. The end of semester exam will consist of multiple choice, short answer and extended response questions and will assess student learning from throughout the semester.

Exclusions Students who have successfully completed NUR364 may not enrol in this unit for credit

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
