Clinical Practice 7: Transition to Registered Nurse (NUR379)
|Description||This unit provides the opportunity to develop clinical skills, knowledge and competence within clinical contexts. Each of the units will incrementally support nursing students as they transition to registered nurse. This unit focuses on the nursing skills and knowledge that can be applied to the complex care of the individual, family and community. This unit will contribute 120 clinical hours towards integrated workplace learning completed within either acute medical, surgical, mental health, community health, paediatrics, maternity, operating theatre or speciality context.|
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Clinical practice simulation: 10 hours pre placement, clinical practice debrief: 2 hours post placement|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This unit incorporates 138 hours of supported placement. This involves 10 hours of pre placement clinical simulation, 120 hours of clinical placement (plus 6 hours of clinical portfolio completion) and 2 hours of post placement brief. The 120 hours of clinical placement will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate a level of competence commensurate with the knowledge and experience of a semester 6 nursing student in each domain of the NMBA Standards for the Registered Nurse (2016). Each component of the placement must be completed. Non-completion of any component may impact on progression through the course.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Clinical placement: 120 hours over a 3 week period.
Clinical portfolio/reflection completion: 2 hours per week
|Assessment||Students must complete a Clinical Portfolio which will provide an opportunity for students to apply knowledge, demonstrate understanding, develop critical reflection and other academic skills that are required for success within a clinical placement. The Clinical Portfolio will provide opportunities for students to apply theoretical concepts and research evidence to practice, and develop written communication skills. Additionally, the assessment will introduce students to university and professional requirements and expectations, and allow them to develop academic, professional and lifelong learning skills. Informal feedback is provided to the student by the Clinical Nurse Facilitator on a regular basis during the week long placement, in addition formal feedback is provide to the student through the summative assessment at the completion of the placement.|
|Prerequisites||Completion of NUR249, NUR352 and NUR353.
Completion of all clinical practice documentation (refer to the Clinical Documentation Guide which is available to all enrolled students).
Co-requisite: BNR359, NUR369 and NUR361
|Assessment||A result of Ungraded Pass or Fail is awarded for this unit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
