Modern Physics (PEN231)

Description The aim of this unit is to study the basis of modern physics. Topics: special relativity, wave mechanics, introductory quantum theory including one and three dimensional systems, matter as particles and waves, light as particles and waves, the hydrogen atom and atomic structure. Students will be required to complete experimental activities during the unit.
Unit Learning Outcomes he aim of this unit is to
ULO1 Provide you with in-depth knowledge of modern physics, i.e. the special theory of relativity and quantum theory
ULO2 Enhance your problem solving and critical thinking skills
ULO3 Give you the opportunity to learn and practice the skills needed to perform experimental tests, acquire data, analyse that data, and communicate the significance of your results to others
ULO4 Allow you to acquire an historical perspective of the scientific process and the development of the Quantum Theory.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 x 2 hours per week; workshops: 1 x 2 hours per week.
External students: no attendance requirement.
Unit Learning Experiences For you to gain a deep understanding of the content of this unit it is essential for you to practice working with the concepts and also gain an historical understanding of the development of the science. Lectures and workshops are therefore kept to a minimum to allow you time for independent study. Demonstrations and laboratory work allow you to experience the historic experiments that enabled physicists to develop the quantum theory. Simulations help you with your understanding of special relativity. For off-campus students these experiments are story-boarded on the unit website and extra material is provided by the on-campus students in the discussion forum allowing off-campus students an insight into the on-campus experiments.
Other Learning Experiences There is no attendance requirement for external students.
Assessment The structure for the unit is provided by a well written textbook and students are assessed on their learning of the content by short exercises at the completion of each chapter. The workshops alternate between tutorials, demonstrations and laboratory sessions from which students produce tutorial presentations, discussion papers and laboratory reports respectively. These activities are all linked to historical experiments and discoveries documented in the unit content. The final exam focuses on students understanding of the unit and their problem solving ability.
Prerequisites MAS161 Calculus and Matrix Algebra and PEC152/PEN152 Principles of Physics.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
