Physics of Materials (PEN317)

|Description||This unit covers the properties of matter and the structure and properties of solids and surfaces and their technological applications. Topics covered include phases of matter, properties of gases, liquids and solids, defects and dislocations in solids, quantum statistics, lattice vibrations, free electron theory of solids, metals, insulators and semiconductors, semiconductor devices, dielectrics, magnetic and amorphous materials, superconductivity and surfaces of solids.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||At the completion of this unit the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of key concepts and principles involved in the states of matter, especially the solid state and surfaces.
2. Use this knowledge to analyse and interpret phenomena and applications of materials science.
3. Demonstrate and apply experimental skills to the study of solids and surfaces.
4. Apply analytical problem solving skills to problems in materials science.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of professional practice and research ethics in materials science through problem solving and laboratory work.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Lectures: 3 x 1 hour per week; Tutorial: 1 hour per week; Laboratories: 4 x 3 hours per semester.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is to use weekly lectures to supplement self-directed learning via readings. Student led tutorials are used to facilitate the student's abilities to understand and explain the material covered. Laboratory exercises provide opportunities for both group based learning through experimental procedure, data collection and discussion, and individual learning as students write their own reports. Links to online resources are provided to complement the main material. Outside of the timetabled tutorial sessions forums are available on the unit LMS to enable students to further discuss the material.|
|Assessment||There is one validation test and two theory assignments with short answer and calculation questions designed to evaluate students' understanding of the learning objectives. Collectively these are worth 25% of the overall grade. Marked assignments will be returned with feedback. There are three experimental exercises that students will need to provide reports for, which demonstrate actual applications of material covered. This section of assessment is worth 25% of the overall grade. The final exam covers the entire unit in the form of short answer questions and numerical problems. It will be worth 50% of the overall grade.|
|Prerequisites||CHE140 Fundamentals of Chemistry/PEC140 Introduction to Chemistry or CHE144 Foundations of Chemistry/PEC144 Chemical Principles; PEN231/PEC231 Modern Physics, PEC302/PEN202 Thermodynamics for Physics and Nanotechnology.|
|Exclusions||Students who have completed PEC247 Physical and Inorganic Chemistry prior to 2011 may not complete this unit for credit.
Students who have completed PEC317 Physics of Materials prior to 2016 may not complete this unit for credit.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
