Description This unit delivers knowledge surrounding the process of implementing energy management programs in commercial and industrial companies. The unit begins with a general description of energy management programs and the framework and standards for implanting such programs before introducing some of the tools and techniques of energy management, including energy auditing and energy data analysis. The unit then discusses the options for energy management for commercial and industrial premises in a range of areas.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Set up an effective energy plan based on sound principles.
2. Apply the theory and practice of energy audits.
3. Demonstrate how tariffs apply in energy management schemes.
4. Analyse energy data and the economic viability of energy management options.
5. Discuss opportunities for energy management in building design, air conditioning, lighting, industrial plant.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/workshops: 1 x 3 hours per week.
Week 3 Laboratory Only: Electricity and metering: 1 x 2 hours.
Unit Learning Experiences Lectures are used to introduce the main content of the unit and are available online through an LMS site. The lecture material is then reinforced by the consideration of tutorial questions in a subsequent workshop/discussion session. Software is used to allow a collaborative discussion that involves both students in the classroom and students studying online. Knowledge is further developed through a project, which provides a practical application of the skills learnt through the lecture material.
The LMS site will be used to provide details of the activities and also to allow discussion of issues that arise during the unit via Forums on this LMS site.

Students should spend approximately 10 hours per week on this unit.
Other Learning Experiences For internal students there will be a site visit to see the energy consuming equipment in a large facility. Materials from these learning experiences are made available to online students.
Assessment The assessment for this unit comprises of the following elements:
* On-line quizzes (10%): quizzes are used to consolidate learning from the course materials.
* Assignment (20%): an assignment is given to test student competence on analysing energy data in a range of industry applications
* Project (30%): Students perform an energy audit and develop energy reduction strategies, reinforcing knowledge and skills learnt from the course material.
* Examination (40%): a final, open book exam tests student competence on the application of energy management strategies.
Collectively the assessment tasks provide realistic examples of activities students would undertake as graduates in the workplace if they pursued a career in energy management. Feedback on assessment components is provided by the unit co-ordinators and mentors.
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Graduate Certificate in Energy Studies, Graduate Certificate in Energy and Carbon Studies, Graduate Diploma in Energy Studies, Graduate Diploma in Energy and Carbon Studies, Graduate Diploma in Energy and the Environment, Master of Renewable Energy or Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed PEC594 Energy Management or OEENV594 Energy Management may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
