Renewable and Sustainable Energy Dissertation (PEN624)

Description A core unit for students in the Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy second year who are invited into the Research Experience stream based on their academic record. It involves an investigation of a research topic and provides half the points required for the degree's final year. Projects range from literature surveys to small research projects. A list of topics and supervisors are available via the Unit Coordinator, or students may seek the Unit Coordinator's approval on their own topic.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to: ULO1. Show initiative in selecting a research project and identifying a research question ULO2. Demonstrate research skills in conducting a literature review and developing a research plan. ULO3. Undertake and complete a research project in the area of renewable energy, sustainable energy or climate change management. ULO4. Communicate, orally and in writing, about this research process and outcomes to others in the scientific and general community.
Timetabled Learning Activities No timetabled activities but regular meetings are expected to occur between student and supervisor. The Unit Coordinator will arrange monthly progress meetings for all students to attend and report on their progress and ask any questions.
Unit Learning Experiences The approach to learning in this unit is through a supervised research process. The student is expected to undertake a research study that demonstrates the ability to collect a body of data, analyse it and then prepare a report and a presentation to demonstrate the results of the study. Interaction with the supervisor occurs in developing the research proposal, undertaking the research, and then preparing the final outputs. This is basically a one on one process between the student and the supervisor(s).
Other Learning Experiences As part of this unit a preparatory research skills module is provided to assist the student in the preparation of a research proposal and the undertaking of a literature review. This module will also discuss skills involved in the analysis of data, and provide advice on the preparation of reports and presentations.
Assessment The assessment tasks are designed to assess how well the student has undertaken a research project. The Research Proposal is submitted (10%) for feedback on the proposed project. After conducting the research project for one semester, a Progress Presentation (7.5%) is assessed; before staff and students for internal students, and for external students a virtual presentation submission with notes as to what would be said during the presentation. Upon submission, the Dissertation (70%) is assessed by two examiners: the Supervisor and one academic not involved in the research. A Final Presentation (12.5%) is also prepared at the end of the project and assessed; The Unit Coordinator collates all marks for the student and final marks are approved by a Master's Dissertation Committee.
Prerequisites Completion of 24 points in the Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy AND an invitation to enter the research experience stream of the 2nd year of the Masters.
Notes Students undertake the Dissertation concurrently with coursework and as such the Academic Chair assists to enrol them in 3, 6 and 9 point versions of the unit for each semester to fit their research around their coursework load. For some students the research skills component of the Dissertation will be done in their first semester (3 points) and the remainder of the dissertation (9 points) will be done in their second semester. For others, the research skills component and the majority of the dissertation will be done in their first semester (9 points) with the dissertation being completed in their second semester (3 points). Evenly splitting the dissertation into 6 points per semester is also possible.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
