Energy Efficient Buildings (PEN670)

Description The aim of this unit is to provide a practical and scientific understanding of the impact of climate on building design and the factors which affect the energy efficiency of the building. The unit also focuses on the evaluation of the energy efficiency of buildings and approaches to reduce energy consumption by occupants of principally domestic and light commercial buildings.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit the student should be able to:
1. Assess a particular building or site in terms of its energy performance and identify opportunities to improve its energy performance.
2. Identify comfort control strategies for the maintenance of thermal comfort based on an analysis of climatic data within a building envelope.
3. Use solar radiation data and solar geometry tools to evaluate solar access for a building.
4. Identify the factors which affect heat transfer into and out of buildings.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/workshops/tutorials: 1 x 3 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit requires students to become competent in the theoretical and practical tasks required for energy efficient building design and the implementation of walkthrough audits of energy and water use in the building. This is achieved through structured and self-paced learning modules. Series of lectures aim to provide an awareness of the different approaches and methodologies available for building design and evaluation of energy efficiency in buildings. Learning also occurs through interactive workshops during in-class contact, supported independent research activity and analysis. One component of assessment is designed for students to critically review existing buildings and provide options for improvement through retrofit. Online discussion forums enable interaction with fellow students and the unit coordinator throughout the semester. Students are expected to spend approximately 10 hours per week for this unit.
Assessment There is one assignment (15%) that students complete during semester, some online quizzes (15%) and one major project (35%) that aims to test students' knowledge on the whole concept of the unit. The project examines the design of an existing building and also conducts a sustainability assessment of the building. Students are required to work on their own home or a house they have access to, in order to get an overview on how energy efficient that house is, and to propose some improvement in building design and options to increase energy efficiency for the house.
An end of semester Examination (35%) tests achievement of the unit objectives as a whole. A passing mark must be achieved in the exam to pass the unit.
Prerequisites Enrolment in the Master of Renewable Energy or Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
Recommended: PEN592 Energy in Society.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed PEC670 or ZPEN670 Energy Efficient Buildings may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
