Media Projects (PHO312)

Description This unit extends the practical, critical and research skills developed in Photography production units. It is designed for dedicated image makers who wish to (i) participate in a client or a tutor-directed project (ii) explore the conceptual possibilities of the visual medium in the context of self-directed work (iii) explore collaborative links with other community based client groups. This unit is designed for students in their third full-time year of study.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1 Demonstrate an understanding of the commercial context and the requirements of the creative industries, and their role as a creative professional within them.
2 Ability to work independently to consistently produce quality work on time and to specification.
3 Ability to work independently to complete skills based photographic projects and present, discuss and have them critically analysed.
4 Demonstrate effective written and visual communication with a range of audiences.
5 Demonstrate effective online marketing skills.

Timetabled Learning Activities Tutorials: 2.5 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences The course is based around acquiring essential skills required to complete a number of self-directed client based projects designed to equip students for commercial work. The development of a professional online presence, portfolio, client proposals and other business materials in the context of working with real world projects with actual clients.
Other Learning Experiences Client based location photography shoot experiences, studio work.
Assessment Three project based photography assessments including written components. Each of these projects will involve a client (tutor selected (2) and student sourced (1). For each project students will take a client brief and from it prepare and achieve client off on a project proposal. Client feedback will form a key part of the assessment. The work from these projects will form the foundation of a client portfolio which the student will present on-line via a website.
Prerequisites Completion of PHO124 Photography 1 and PHO203 Photography 2.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
