Military Force and Counterterrorism (POL232)

|Description||Previously the professional military has played three principal roles. It has protected states, waged wars in pursuit of national interests, and helped maintain international order. Recently, major inter-state wars have disappeared, but unconventional conflicts, insurgencies, and terrorism have increased. This unit focuses on how the military responds to the changing global security situation, with a primary focus on terrorist threats. It examines how the military has become a counterterrorism tool at various levels: detection, prevention, and elimination of the threat.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
LO1: Demonstrate a critical understanding of the role of military force in International Society.
LO2: Analyse the changing nature of war and application of military force.
LO3: Evaluate the role of military force in various theatres, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Somalia.
LO4: Evaluate the role of the military in nation-building and development.
LO5: Critically analyse the role of information & intelligence in countering terrorist threats.
LO6: Explore the ethical dilemmas, which surround the application of deadly force when it comes to countering terrorism or in an insurgency based conflict.
LO7: Communicate clearly and coherently both orally and in writing.

|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is student-focused. Students will be assessed on the basis of three types of activity. The first will comprise a critique of a journal article or book chapter. The second will be a research essays based on questions and readings, which will enhance the students' ability to carry out high quality research. The third will be the final examination. Students are expected to provide feedback on the unit structure and content.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
