Psychology: Individual Differences and Performance (PSY391)

|Description||This unit explores the major psychological determinants of human performance with a focus on personality and motivation. In the unit, we will consider the issues associated with conceptualising and measuring performance and lack of performance. The complex relations between individual differences in personality, situational factors and relationships, and motivation will be discussed. The application of theory to practice will be investigated in various contexts where people seek to optimise human performance.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Display basic knowledge and understanding of core topics including personality, motivation and emotion, individual differences in capacity and behaviour. (APAC GA 1)
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical and empirical bases underpinning the construction, implementation, and interpretation of some of the most widely used personality instruments. (APAC GA 1)
3. Explain psychological phenomena relevant to performance using the concepts, language, and major theories of the discipline. (APAC GA 1)
4. Reflect on and demonstrate critical thinking regarding personality results, and an evidence-based assessment of their validity. (APAC G6 and G3)
5. Use and represent information in an ethical manner (e.g., using appropriate citations in assessment tasks). (APAC GA 4)
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Onshore Lectures: 1.5 hours per week; tutorials: 5 x 1.5 hours
Offshore: 6 x 3.5 hours and 1 x 3 hours combined lecture/tutorials.
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
|Unit Learning Experiences||Lectures in this unit will cover theoretical and applied content related to the individual differences and situational facets relevant to performance outcomes. Tutorials will expand on this information, encourage student discussion on the concepts being addressed, and allow students to trial several measures of individual differences and situational interactions throughout the course of the unit. To get the most out of this unit, students should attend each lecture and tutorial where possible. Unit readings can be conducting depending on your preferences: please feel free to pre-read the contents prior to the lectures each week if you would like an existing basis to understand the lecture content, or conduct the readings following the lectures to consolidate your knowledge of the content. This unit will require skills in independent study, well developed critical thinking skills, the application of theory and concepts to applied situations, and the integration of key concepts in understanding the contributors of performance outcomes.
Tutorials will be conducted on the assumption that you have already engaged with the lecture materials however, so please avoid underpreparing in this regard, otherwise it may diminish the quality of the class discussions on the unit topics. Tutorial classes will often involve small group discussions, interactive class discussions, and interactive activities related to individual differences and situational facets related to performance. These activities will assist in your consolidation of the unit contents, and will provide you with the opportunity to experience how various individual differences and situational facets are measured.

The assessments in this unit consist of a:
· Mid-semester test - 20%
· Research assignment - 40%
· End of semester examination - 40%

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
