BA Honours Thesis in Psychology (PSY520)

Organisational Unit Psychology, Counselling, Exercise Science and Chiropractic
Credit Points 12
Availability MURDOCH: Y-internal
Description This unit provides students with the opportunity to carry out a piece of empirical research under supervision. Students are expected to negotiate a research topic in conjunction with a supervisor. The thesis unit reporting the empirical research represents 12 of the 24 points required for the Honours year.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit, you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of your area of research
2. Make appropriate choices of research design and methods
3. Plan a research study to investigate a problem
4. Evaluate the nature and quality of research
5. Value empirical evidence, and act ethically and professionally
6. Conduct research for and write a thesis
Timetabled Learning Activities
Unit Learning Experiences In this unit you will work under the direction of their thesis supervisor to conceive, design, conduct and write up an original research study in an area of psychology. This involves conducting an in depth literature review, designing the study, collecting and analysing the data, and writing up the study in the form of a thesis.
Other Learning Experiences Approximately weekly meetings with the supervisor. This highly independent research project does not involve regular lectures or tutorials.
Assessment You will be assessed on quality of the thesis you produce. A high quality thesis will demonstrate your understanding of the purpose and importance of each step in the research process, and will be presented with a professional standard of communication. Supervisors may supply written comment on one complete draft of your thesis (only) before submission. You may discuss your thesis verbally with your supervisor and seek feedback from other students at any time.

All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
