Work and Well-being (PSY612)

|Description||Aim: to acquaint students with issues related to the well-being of workers. Topics: theories and management of work related stress, mental health (and ill health) at work, and impact of retirement, retrenchment and unemployment. The unit also covers issues of safety and accident causation, safety measures, improving safety performance, and human factors underlying work performance. Focus will be on maintaining the physical and psychological well-being of the individual employee in a climate which is compatible with the organisational objectives.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Have an understanding of the experience and psychology of people at work and in organisations as these relate to well-being
2. Understand the role Psychologists can have in improving the quality of work life and organisational outcomes.
3. Have a psychology-informed understanding of the issues of employee health, safety, human factors and well-being in occupational settings.
4. Have an understanding of the methodological issues of conducting research within the field of worker well-being including, ethical considerations relating to data collection/access and observation, comparability, contamination and variability and the criterion problem.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Internal: 3-hour weekly seminars.
Internal and External: Online discussions with minimum contribution requirements.
|Unit Learning Experiences||The internal version of the unit has weekly seminars that cover the same topics and content of the online version. The approach to learning is self-directed, but also containing discussion forums to enable greater understanding. Every topic will have readings and sometimes other supportive material to aid your understanding of the topic. Additional reading outside this is recommended to enable your comprehensive understanding in the topic.
|Assessment||Students will contribute to regular discussions to demonstrate understanding of the topic areas, complete an assessment evidence based practice in an organisational psychology context, as well as pass a final exam. You will be given the marking guides for the assignments within the unit guide.|
|Prerequisites||Enrolment in C1114, G1057, M1157, M1238 or D1063|
|Exclusions||Students who have successfully completed PSY512 Work and Wellbeing, or MBS570 Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
