|Description||The thesis in clinical psychology requires completion of two research projects:
(1) an innovative and systematic investigation of a psychological theme relevant to the clinical practice of psychology and the findings of which are relevant to a specific clinical population.
(2) A Translational Research project which consists of an industry or health service oriented portfolio of research projects conducted in partnership with a service provider where data is collected during practicum or based on data available from that service.
|Unit Learning Outcomes||1. Understanding of research principles and practices in clinical psychology such as; advanced knowledge of how to formulate testable research questions based on a critical review of relevant literature, selection and justification of suitable research methods and approaches to data collection within multi study programs of research and advanced knowledge and skill in data analysis, interpretation of findings and scientific reporting in journals of international standing.
2. Demonstration of the capacity to undertake translational research projects within a Scientist-Practitioner approach, to develop and sustain partnerships with service providers, and to disseminate original research findings to the benefit of both the profession and discipline of Clinical Psychology.
3. Develop high level communication skills as demonstrated by the capacity to critically appraise existing research, clearly present and justify research questions and associated methodology, data analysis and interpretation of research findings.
4. Awareness of issues of social justice, inequity in health and mental health outcomes, and challenges in service provision and policy and, in particular, how research can be used to address such issues.
5. Develop skills and knowledge in both basic research and translational research consisting of practice-oriented research based on industry focussed research goals and methods.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||It is a course requirement for students enrolled to attend a series of seminars on research methodology.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||Major Research project: working with a supervisory team, the major research project consists of a series of integrated empirical studies and systematic literature review or meta-analysis. This would be developed as a traditional thesis, or thesis by publication, and would normally be around 40,000 words.
Translational Research Project: consisting of practice oriented research based on industry focussed research goals. Data would be collected from placements and could include clinical cases and placement driven reviews driven by industry needs. The research presented in the Translational Research project will be negotiated with the placement agencies and guided, in part, by their service needs. Students will have opportunities and experience in developing translational research projects designed to meet the needs of clinical services and the community. This project would require a total of no more than 20,000 words and consist of several smaller studies, linked by an overarching statement.
|Other Learning Experiences||Students will meet regularly with a minimum of two supervisors and every 6 months with an Advisory Panel (comprised of the supervisors and an Advisory Panel Chair, appointed at the commencement of candidature in the doctoral program).
The translational research project will be a collaboration with Industry experts and service providers who will work with the supervisory team. In some cases, additional academic expertise will be required and additional academic staff will be invited onto the supervisory team as associate supervisors.
|Assessment||Confirmation of Candidature, which includes presentation of the proposed program of study and completion of an extensive literature review, will ensure you have refined your research question; the significance of the project; the approaches and methods to be used; and have appropriate target dates set. Feedback will be provided by the Advisory Panel. There are no marks allocated to this; however, completion to the satisfaction of the Graduate Research Office is necessary for confirmation of candidature.
Therefore, satisfactory progress will be assessed on the basis of milestones completed and through review of Annual Progress Reports.
Assessment of the thesis is Pass/Fail and will be in accordance with the University regulations for the examination of Professional Doctorate theses.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
