|Description||An innovative and systematic investigation of an appropriate research problem is required. A thesis supervisor will be appointed for each candidate from the University lecturing staff in Psychology. The thesis must be presented for examination in accordance with University requirements for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) theses.|

|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is self-directed research under academic supervision.|
|Other Learning Experiences||Students will meet regularly with a minimum of two supervisors and every 6 months with an Advisory Panel (comprised of the supervisors and an Advisory Panel Chair, appointed at the commencement of candidature in the doctoral program).|
|Assessment||Confirmation of Candidature, which includes presentation of the proposed program of study and completion of an extensive literature review, will ensure you have refined your research question; the significance of the project; the approaches and methods to be used; and have appropriate target dates set. Feedback will be provided by the Advisory Panel. There are no marks allocated to this; however, completion to the satisfaction of the Graduate Research Office is necessary for confirmation of candidature.
Therefore, satisfactory progress will be assessed on the basis of milestones completed and through review of Annual Progress Reports.
Assessment of the thesis is Pass/Fail and will be in accordance with the University regulations for the examination of PhD theses.

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
