Health Policy in Australia and Beyond (SHP541)

|Description||This unit provides students with an overview of key health policy and public health issues. In addition to general content the unit includes a specific focus on health care and public policy in Australia. It considers the political, economic, social, behavioural and epidemiological contexts within which health health is managed and the forces that promote and oppose change..|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Discuss the Australian health care system in the context of alternative models;
2. Evaluate the main stages in the public policy making process;
3. Discuss theoretical perspectives in public policy analysis, including economic, political science, sociological and public health perspectives;
4. Identify policies affecting the health workforce;
5. Analyse the influences on of public health;
6. Critique health policies in relation to disadvantaged groups; and
7. Discuss future health priorities and needed policy reform.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||External delivery within Australia: On-line participation with no physical attendance requirement. Blended delivery in the UAE: On-line participation and attendance at all scheduled class activities.
All offerings of this unit include the equivalent of 30 hours of structured learning.
|Unit Learning Experiences||The approach to learning in this unit is aimed at the post graduate student and as such students are expected to demonstrate and further develop their graduate attributes throughout the course of the semester. Students are expected to fully engage with the unit materials and learning activities. This includes, but is not limited to, reading, independent inquiry, self-directed learning, collaborating with others in the context of a face-to-face and/or online learning environment, and participating in and contributing to discussions and analysis. The unit is delivered via external study within Australia and via a blended learning format at off-shore locations . Students should rely on the Unit Information and Learning Guide to provide detailed information on unit learning activities and assessment.|
|Assessment||The unit will include three assessment components:
1. Participation (30%). This will be assessed via involvement in and contributions to discussion forums which may be conducted on-line or in class seminars.
2. Quizzes (30%)
3. Essay (40%): 3000 word essay. This assessment is designed to provide students an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the unit content. Students will have a choice of topics for their essay

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
