Resilient Regions: Sustainability in Practice (SUS301)

|Description||This capstone unit showcases sustainability in practice at a regional scale. The unit is immersive, interactive and practical. For internal students the unit includes a week-long residency in Denmark WA in early December. During the residency, field trips and case studies will cover: resilience; bioregionalism; sense of place; sustainable technologies; eco-entrepreneurism; and sustainable agriculture. There are extra costs for this unit to cover accommodation and food. External students will be expected to visit similar case studies in their own region.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||Upon successful completion of the unit students will be able to:
ULO 1 : Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principal concepts theories of resilience thinking, bioregionalism and their application to sustainability at a regional level;
ULO 2 : Analyse sustainability and resilience challenges and solutions at a local and regional level.
ULO 3 : Apply inter-disciplinary perspectives in responding creatively to sustainability problems and in developing sustainability solutions;
ULO 4 : Critically reflect on sustainability and resilience concepts, theories and practices
ULO 5 : Work both independently, and collaboratively and respectfully with a range of people
ULO 6 : Undertake independent self-directed field work
ULO 7 : Communicate effectively both orally and in writing appropriate to a range of audiences and types of documents.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Introductory session in late November. Week long residency in Denmark, Western Australia in early December. Final session in late January.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||For internal students, the approach to learning is the unit is immersive and experiential, with a week-long residency featuring visits and field trips to practitioners in a regional setting. Students will be required to take a proactive and inquiring approach to learning in this unit, as the structure is unconventional. Learning in the unit will be based on a small number of core theoretical readings which will inform and underpin the field trips and visits.
An external version of the unit is also offered, utilising video and audio recordings from the field trips. External students will be encouraged to discover similar local examples of resilience and sustainability, and undertake independent investigations.

|Prerequisites||Enrolment (and completion of at least 48 points) in one of the following majors: Sustainable Development; Community Development; International Aid and Development; Environmental Management and Sustainability; Conservation and Wildlife Biology; Environmental Science or enrolment with the approval of the Unit Coordinator.|
|Exclusions||Students who have completed STP311 or SUS302 Resilient Regions may not enrol in this unit for credit.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
