Sustainable Tourism Development (Asian Study Tour) (TOU310)

|Description||Sustainable Tourism Development (Asian Study Tour) is an intensive, five-week unit which includes a two-week study tour to Japan. It is designed for students in tourism, community development, international aid and development and sustainable development. It explores the economic, social-cultural, community and environmental impacts of tourism destinations on local communities and stakeholders. Students will apply theoretical concepts and preliminary research to presentations to local community and stakeholders at the host destination.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit students should be able to:
1. Discuss the nature of tourism destinations with reference to principles and underpinning theories relevant to sustainable tourism development.
2. Identify the demands of contemporary tourism on host destinations. Provide a discussion on the demands placed on tourism destinations, local communities and stakeholders within concerns related to economic, social-cultural, community and environmental impacts.
3. Examine the role of sustainable development and strategic destination management for balancing tourism demand, community stakeholders and destination development planning needs.
4. Conduct academic and industry-based research, and be able apply knowledge to recommend appropriate sustainable tourism development initiatives for the host destination and its stakeholders.
5. Build a professional consultative team with project management skills to work collaboratively and effectively as a team. This includes efficient management and implementation of key project milestones and deliverables.
6. Produce a sustainable tourism development plan for the host destination stakeholder(s) that reflects their needs and expectations, and its deliverability.
7. Demonstrate successful cross-cultural communications skills and develop working relationships with local communities and stakeholders in a culturally appropriate manner.
|Timetabled Learning Activities||The programme will consist of a total of 36 workshop hours as follows:
· Week 1 and 2: 3x3 hour workshops per week (18 Hours). Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
· Week 3 and 4 (in country - Japan): Daily one-hour workshops (10 hours). Monday-Friday.
· Week 5: 4x2 hour workshops (8 hours). Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
and overseas field experience; Presentations to stakeholders.
|Unit Learning Experiences||This is a five-week winter semester program.
· Intensive Workshops: (Perth) 2 weeks pre-trip; 1 week post trip.
· In-country experience: (2018: in Sapporo, Hokkaido Japan) 2 weeks
This unit combines timetabled learning workshops with an International study tour, which includes a strong self study and peer-learning component. It uses the 'flipped classroom' blended learning approach; and is supported by presentations from invited speakers from external experts, industry stakeholders, and governmental and non governmental organisations to further underscore the unit's focus on applicable, practical knowledge. Students will also be engaged in academic and industry-based research activities to develop their research skills and competencies in applying knowledge and concepts learnt to real-world issues in sustainable tourism development.
This unit requires students to work in groups of five to prepare a sustainable tourism development plan in collaboration with the selected in-country community stakeholder(s).

· In country experience: (Sapporo, Hokkaido Japan)
· This will include basic Japanese language and cultural enrichment programmes, as well as site visits to tourism destinations and/or attractions in Sapporo and its surrounds. Students will have the opportunity to learn from local tourism operators, industry speakers and guest lecturers in Sapporo, Hokkaido. They will also have the opportunity to engage and collaborate on peer-learning activities with local Japanese students.
There will also be a field learning experience programme with local community and stakeholders at the selected regional destinations in Hokkaido. Students will have the opportunity to engage in discussions with representatives from community, industry and Government.

|Prerequisites||Prerequisites: Completion of 36 points of study; GPA 2 and above; or interview with Academic Chair.

All eligible students may apply, where they are prepared to pay for costs of the fieldtrip (self-funded or through Study Aboard funding support opportunities such as OS-HELP). An estimated cost of the program is AUD2,000 - 2,300, plus return airfares to Sapporo, Japan, in addition to the course fee of a three credit point unit. This will cover the accommodation (shared accommodation, student hostel or home-stay), workshops and scheduled activities, transportation and some meals (for the in-country land components) during the study tour in Japan.
Expression of Interest
Students have to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). This will be reviewed by the Tourism Academic Chair and Unit's teaching team, and places are offered to selected students. The EOI will open in early 2020.
|Quota||This unit is subject to quota. Logistical limitations of the overseas tour. Completion of 24 part 1 units. GPA >2 and permission of the Academic Chair.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
