Seminars in Veterinary Clinical Studies (VET679)

|Description||This unit explores issues that are pertinent to all areas of clinical veterinary medical research. The students are required to present one formal seminar during the unit, to critique and reflect on one of the seminars presented, and attend and participate in discussion/questions.|
|Unit Learning Outcomes||On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Construct a scientific presentation using presentation software (e.g. PowerPoint, Keynote)
2. Effectively deliver a scientific presentation to a professional audience
3. Analyse and modify your presentation style following audience feedback and critical reflection
4. Provide a critical assessment of a research presentation
|Timetabled Learning Activities||Seminars: 1 x 1 hour per fortnight. There are approximately 25 seminars scheduled per year. Attendance at >80% (> 20) is necessary.|
|Unit Learning Experiences||This Unit requires the student to attend and participate in a series of seminars. It will be necessary for each student to prepare and present a seminar, to provide feedback for other presenters, and to complete written assignments throughout the unit. In addition, the theory behind presentation of scientific material to a professional audience and critical assessment of presentations will be reviewed both on LMS (as part of discussion forums) and directly with each student's clinical supervisor. The participation in seminars (as both a presenter and audience member) and completion of the assignments will allow development of presentation skills, reflective learning practice and the ability to critically evaluate oral presentations. Exposure to multiple presentation styles and high emphasis on self- directed learning are intended to allow the learning objectives to be achieved whilst not restricting development of an individual presentation style.|
|Assessment||Assessment is based upon:
* Attendance at seminars (20%):
* At least 80% of seminars must be attended (unless an excused absence is granted by the Clinical Supervisor and Unit Coordinator).
* Failure to attend at least 20% of seminars will result in failure of the Unit
* Delivery of a Research Presentation (30%)
* Reflective essay (25%)
* Written critical assessment of one seminar (25%)
Feedback for the presenting student will be provided from staff and students attending each seminar. Written feedback will be provided for the reflective essay and critical assessment assignments.
|Prerequisites||Enrolment into Master of Veterinary Clinical Studies or Doctor of Veterinary Medical Science.|

|Internet Access Requirements||Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.|
