Description | This unit expands students' understanding of 'social justice' in Indigenous and other minority contexts from one-dimensional perceptions of the amelioration of social disadvantage to a deeper more nuanced appreciation of the interplay between instances of inequity, social and political logics and the remedies these attempt to generate. It does this by exploring some of the exciting work being produced in this area by Australian and international thinkers whose critical focus is the nexus of identity and social and economic marginalisation.
Unit Learning Outcomes | 1. To be able to explain the link between critical theory and the desire for improved social justice for particular societal groups, with relation to historical, political, economic and environmental considerations; 2. To be able to describe how thinkers from marginalized groups, including indigenous peoples and other minorities, in the neo-Europes such as Australia and other former European colonies have accessed and transformed the project(s) of critical theory; 3. To be able to apply an analysis of the historical power of the 'colonial binary' to shape in unegalitarian ways the relationship between dominant and subordinate social groupings; 4. To be able to apply an understanding of how reversals of this colonial binary, while useful in particular contexts, do not offer broadscale, lasting solutions to the problems generated by colonial thinking; 5. To come to see how students' own thinking and practice can be situated within the scope of the critical project. |

Timetabled Learning Activities | Lectures/workshop: 1 x 2.5 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences | The approach to learning in this unit is that you will be, via guided reading and discussion activities, small-group work and the use of audio-visual materials, carefully led through a small number of philosophical questions and complex real-world issues, in order for you to arrive at well-informed, sophisticated positions on these of your own.
Assessment | In order to achieve its main learning objectives, the majority of early assessments in this unit are designed to increase your capacity to produce a well-informed, intelligent critical response to a particular position of one of Australia's leading Indigenous public intellectuals. These 'lead-up' assessments include reading exercises, guided analytical tasks and online quizzes.
Prerequisites | Nil. | ||||
Exclusions | Students who have completed AIS303 Indigeneity, Critical Theory and Social Justice may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access Requirements | Murdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online. |
