Description This unit provides a range of generic learning skills specifically for BBus students. It aims to equip students with competency in communication skills in literacy, numeracy, and information technology in the context of Business Studies. These skills include reading and summing up academic papers, researching and writing essays, cogent argumentation, correct referencing, finding and evaluating information, as well as numeracy skills, including the interpretation of charts, graphs, tables and other visual materials.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Apply the rules of Academic Integrity and explain their relevance;
2. Identify and use research strategies and methodologies that are relevant to Business and demonstrate the ability to use IT to research, communicate, analyse and present information;
3. Apply communication techniques that are appropriate to a range of contexts relevant to Business and demonstrate written and oral communication skills using appropriate formats and referencing style; and
4. Use numerical data and other visual information applicable to Business.
Timetabled Learning Activities Workshops: 2 hours per teaching week
Unit Learning Experiences The unit is delivered using blended learning design features with core unit materials provided in a digital format followed up by small class knowledge application and skills development. This is enhanced by self directed learning to further develop skills and application of knowledge to practical and current issues.

Prerequisites Enrolment in Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Business in Applied Accounting, or Bachelor of Digital Marketing and Media, Bachelor of Business in Sustainability
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed a Foundation Unit (units beginning with FDN) may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
