Description This unit helps develop the skills and understandings needed to study successfully in Education. You will learn how to communicate effectively in speech and in writing (including academic writing); engage in critical thinking and problem solving about education topics; explore strategies for independent and collaborative learning; and practise reading with purpose and with understanding. You will also begin to investigate and discuss some key ideas and current debates in Education, as preparation for more in-depth exploration in later units.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Apply time-management principles to deal with the demands of university study
2. Read a range of texts (professional, literary, and academic) with understanding
3. Read critically, questioning your own and other people's assumptions
4. Demonstrate an awareness of the importance of interpersonal and intercultural understanding
5. Demonstrate an awareness of positive approaches to collaborative learning
6. Be aware of some basic research methodologies used in the discipline of Education
7. Access, evaluate and use a variety of information sources
8. Use numeracy as a tool for learning and research
9. Understand and practise academic integrity
10. Express ideas with clarity, both orally and in writing
11. Demonstrate understanding of written and oral conventions of academic communication, and apply this understanding to create texts
12. Recognise and summarise arguments
13. Reflect on your learning, and use feedback to support this process
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures/workshops: 3 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences This unit has been designed to help you study successfully throughout your BEd degree. In the unit, skills are learned and applied using relevant and current ideas in the field of Education. The unit is scaffolded to build knowledge and understanding systematically from week to week, so it is important to maintain a regular pattern of study throughout the semester. This means attending every lecture or (if you are an external student) listening to the lecture recordings every week. If you are studying on-campus you must attend every workshop, and prepare by completing the required readings in advance. You are also expected to complete the activities in the Learning Guide either during workshops or (if you are studying online) week-by-week.
The unit incorporates peer interaction through group-based learning in workshops and in online discussion.
Assessment There are 2 assignments and an exam in this unit. Assessments are designed collectively to enable you to achieve each of the unit learning outcomes.
Assignment 1a: Annotated bibliography 20%
Assignment 1b: Essay based on the Annotated bibliography 30%
Discussion forums: 20%
Exam: Closed book 30%
Tutors provide feedback for assignments one (a) and one (b) using the marking rubric for these assignments. There are two assessment points for the discussion forums - midway through the semester and at the end of the semester. These are assessed using the marking rubric provided.
Prerequisites Enrolment in an initial teacher education course.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed a Foundation Unit (units beginning with FDN) may not enrol in this unit for credit.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
