Innovation and Ethics in Engineering (BEN300)

Description This unit extends research skills in engineering developed in the previous unit. To generate value for their employer, professional engineers must be able to conduct research then apply the results to solving problems in an innovative fashion. Given the risks arising from engineering activities professional behaviour must always be shaped by an understanding of the ethical implications. Students will develop skills by preparing project concepts, conducting literature reviews, formulating proposals and a poster presentation.
Unit Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. identify opportunities for both disruptive and incremental innovation;
2. develop attitudes and create environments that are conducive to generating ideas for solving complex problems;
3. develop and apply a systematic approach to problem solving, creative thinking, and innovation;
4. exploit diversity within a team to create innovative ideas, services, processes or products that meet user-defined needs within constraints set by users and producers;
5. understand the importance of ethical behaviour by engineers towards clients and the community at large.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 1 x 2 hours per week; Workshop: 1 x 2 hours per week.
Unit Learning Experiences Students will be exposed to the research methodologies commonly followed by professional engineers. Lectures will be delivered by industry practitioners who will expose the students to processes they follow in their professional activities. The workshops will provide an opportunity for students to explore case studies drawn from professional literature. Finally the students will conduct significant self-study, applying the ideas to their chosen discipline to develop a suitable research concept, proposal and presentation.
Assessment Assignment 1: Report on innovative opportunities and solutions. Value 20%
Assignment 2: Essay on the ethical perspectives of a historical engineering failure. Value 20%
Project: Analysis of an engineering product as an innovation. Value 40%
Exam: Short answer questions covering topics in innovation and ethics. Value 20%
Prerequisites BEN200 Engineering Research Skills; MAS261/MAS220 Mathematical Methods OR MAS208/MAS221 Mathematical Modelling.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
