Description This unit introduces components of cells, their synthesis, function and control mechanisms; demonstrates the integrated, controlled nature of the normal cell; and develops both manual and conceptual skills in biology. Topics: cell ultrastructure; proteins; enzymes; membranes; energy metabolism; oxidative phosphorylation; electron transport chains; photosynthesis; structure of DNA; transcription and the role of RNA in the cell; the genetic code; translation and the role of ribosomes; gene control; DNA synthesis; chromosomes and mitosis; meiosis; introduction to genetics, inheritance and cell specialisation.
Unit Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the nature and functions of cells.
2. Identify sub-cellular organelles and be aware of their structures and functions.
3. Describe the structure, properties, and roles of proteins, enzymes and membranes.
4. Understand cellular energy generation and utilisation.
5. Explain the fundamentals of genetics including the chemistry of DNA, chromosome theory and gene regulation.
6. Understand the fundamentals of genetic diversity and inheritance.
7. Understand the basis of cell specialisation.
8. Apply spectrophotometric principles and techniques in the examination of cells and the collection of biological data.
9. Prepare written laboratory reports that record observations, demonstrate data analysis and present conclusions that relate to published scientific literature.
10. Consistently display safe and valid laboratory practice.
Timetabled Learning Activities Lectures: 3 hours per week; laboratories: 6 x 3 hour sessions per semester; optional Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS): 1 hour per week.
Unit Learning Experiences Lectures and laboratory classes are the core of the unit; they integrate to build knowledge and skills in cellular biology.
Other Learning Experiences Worksheets to reinforce the application of concept are provided in the LMS. Students work on these independently and check their answers after completion. These provide a framework for the level of understanding required.
Assessment Assignment Description Value Laboratory reports (six) Feedback is provided on annotated reports to students to suggest improvement. 25% Mid Semester Exam Lectures 1-15 and Laboratories 1-2, inclusive All multiple choice questions, marks and correct answers are made available in LMS 20% Online quizzes 1-10. All multiple choice of true/false questions, marks and correct answers are made available in LMS 15% Final Exam All of the Unit material Multiple choice, short answer and problem solving. Past papers and sample answers are made available in the LMS. 40% The final score is the total of these components added together. There is no requirement that you pass each of the components to pass the unit.
Prerequisites A thorough knowledge of ATAR Chemistry is assumed. For students who did not achieve a WACE course score of more than 50% in Chemistry (3A/3B) or Chemistry ATAR within the three years immediately preceding enrolment, completion of CHE140 Fundamentals of Chemistry is required.

Successful completion of BSC100 Building Blocks for Science Students is required. BEd(Sec) students not meeting these prerequisite requirements will need to seek approval from their Academic Chair to participate in this unit.
Exclusions Students who have successfully completed BIO152 Foundations of Cell and Molecular Biology/Foundations of Cell Biology cannot enrol for credit in this unit.
Quota This unit is subject to quota. Laboratory and staff availability limit the places to be offered in semester 1 of 2020 to 180 students. No admission requirements; students will be accepted until the quota is full.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
